Rajkot, the former Capital of the princely State of the same name, is a fast developing city in the Saurashtra peninsula. In the pre-independence days, it was the headquarters of the British Government Resident for the Western Indian States. The State was also known for its Raj Kumar College, established in 1870, for the education of the princes of the Indian States. This college is now open to all. Rajkot is also associated with the early life of Mahatma Gandhi. He spent some years in this city with his father who was the Diwan (Chief Minister).
